I’ve been so so sooo excited to share our trip to Telluride with you guys. Cuz honestly, this place is magical. I’ve been fortunate enough to go to some beautiful places in my lifetime. And I have to say that Telluride is up there at the top.
Since moving to Colorado, I’ve heard time and time again about how beautiful Telluride was but kept putting it on the back burner because this place is far. However, I wish I didn’t let that deter us because we didn’t want to leave once it came time to check out.
It reminded me of Switzerland and it’s in our own backyard.
Well, a 6 hour away backyard but still, this place holds a special place in our hearts. So much so, that we will be returning again in July! Haha, obsessed much? Ya maybe. We’ve already began looking at real estate (even though we need about a million to buy anything!!)
I mean, Oprah and Ralph Lauren have homes here and y’all know they have good taste!
Regardless, there are plenty of luxury resorts to house us in the meantime and tons of opportunities to make lifelong memories.
So Telluride, it definitely lives up to the hype and then some.
We went in mud season or as locals call it “secret season”. It’s basically a great chance to escape to gorgeous mountain towns in the spring and grab amazing hotel discounts. Since weather is so highly unpredictable and the towns are sleepy, everything is a fraction of the cost.
When we saw the prices for resorts over Memorial Day Weekend for under $200/night, we knew we had to go. The extra day gave us an extra day to make the long drive, especially with Cam in tow.
We booked our stay at the Peaks Resort which is in Mountain Village and it was a great place for our little family. The room was huge and the hotel is very dog friendly, which was perfect since we had the Pheebs with us.
Our location in Mountain Village was great – it’s perfect for families and close to the gondola which connect you to downtown Telluride. So bear in mind, when you book in Mountain Village, you will either have to take the gondola into town or drive, which is about 15 minutes away.
The gondola offers the most incredible views of Telluride when you come down the mountain. It was one of the highlights of our trip haha. Seriously. They have ones that are big enough for strollers and you can even bring your furry friends. In case you didn’t know this, Colorado is extremely dog friendly 🙂
What we did in Telluride
Since neither of us have been to Telluride and this was our first time traveling with Cam (he was 6 weeks at the time), we wanted to keep it easy. We didn’t know how he would do his first time away from home and he did great! He slept amazing at the hotel and it was easy to go back and forth between downtown and Mountain Village to put him down for naps and nurse.
We went into this trip without any big plans other than take it easy, hike, explore downtown and nap haha. And we did just that. We got into town around 4 Saturday afternoon and checked in. We decided we would just have some wine and a bite to eat at the hotel restaurant and the views were incredible. Omg. Just stunning.
After dinner, we decided to drive around to acclimate ourselves with the area and check out the little downtown area. Since MountainFilm was going on, the town was alive and had such a great energy about it. Downtown was hustling and bustling and seriously made us so excited for the following day. We drove back to our hotel while witnessing the most incredible sunset. Seriously, the lighting in Telluride gives me all the hearts for eyes.
We woke up early and got a quick start to the day because we heard that hiking trails get busy by 10. By the time we got Starbucks coffee and breakfast, it was about 9 and we went to Bear Creek Trail I decided to wear Cam in our carrier and we brought Pheebs and we only made it a little ways up the trail haha. We were stopping like every other minute to take pictures and posing with Cam (we’re such new parents haha). But seriously, ugh it’s just so beautiful! It was also hard carrying a little baby, at high altitude and 6 weeks post partum. I got my workout in and was done about 30 minutes up the hill.
After our hike, we went back to the hotel to relax a little before taking the gondola into town for lunch and exploring. And this was my favorite part of the trip. Downtown Telluride is so charming and I love it’s authentic Colorado vibe. It probably is the “most Colorado” city we have been to. There is just something about the energy and vibe of this mountain town that makes you fall in love with it. It’s hard to pinpoint what it is exactly, but you just feel happier there. Basically all we did was walk around the downtown and taking it all in. And as simple as that sounds, it was perfect!
The rest of the day was spent relaxing, eating some pizza and having some wine in downtown and going to bed early. Haha we’re parents now 🙂
Since this was Memorial Day, we weren’t sure what traffic would be like on our way home so we decided to head out of Telluride before 10. We drove around to take in the views of San Juan Mountains of Bridal Veil Falls and it was just gorgeous. It was a great way to end our time in Telluride before the long drive home.
To break up the trip, we decided to take the scenic route to Carbondale and make a pit stop at the Maroon Bells in Aspen and omg, they do not disappoint. This was our second time seeing the Maroon Bells and they are stunning. They’re the most photographed site in Colorado and for good reason. We had been once before doing the fall and they were just as beautiful in the Spring.
After stopping there for about 30 minutes, we were ready to get back. Funny how that happens how you just get over it and wanna get home, huh? Anyways, we made it back home by about 8 at night and were so happy to be home.
So needless to say, Telluride is insanely gorgeous. It’s fun to have finally found a spot here in Colorado that we feel is “our place” that we can escape to. We can’t wait to return next month and explore more. I can’t wait to share with you more on this fabulous location!
